ArticleName: HEIGHTS AS LOCATION FOR SACRAL PLOT IN TOLKIEN’S «LORD OF THE RINGS» Authors: E. A. Nesterova Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russian Federation In the section The Plot, Motive, Genre
Abstract: Article analyses the sacral plot embedded into the basic plot of J.R.R. Tolkien’s «Lord of the Rings». The sacral plot is being revealed through the analysis of episodes taking place on heights appearing in the story in abundance. These episodes contain a free-standing meaning and development. They concern the main hero and the main villain only. The main plot – the Fellowship’s journey turns out to be a mere consequence of this hidden plotline. The image of a natural object – mountain – is used to organize plot’s composition and as well it helps the author to reveal the inherent metaphysical logic of events. In «Lord of the Rings» we may speak about «mountain’s plot»; natural object and plot in their correlation transfer from form’s components into components of content and significance of the work. Keywords: mountain, sacral plot, sacrifice, natural object’s role in plot’s structuring, plot’s composition, j. r. r. tolkien Bibliography: |
