ArticleName: Nomination as an Analytical Category in the Russian State Discourse Research: Experience and Problems of Conceptualization and Attribution Authors: Nikolay S. Arsenev, Nadezhda I. Nedashkovskaya Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow, Russian Federation
Abstract: The article addresses key issues of studying nominations as a process of cognition, designation and (re)construction of phenomena by intellectuals of the Russian state in modern Russian research historiography. The focus of the study is on the potential of nomination as an analytical category for the analysis of discursive practices of the intellectual culture of the epoch. The conceptualization of the nomination phenomenon, the problems of attribution of nominations were analyzed (the question was studied on the basis of researches in which Ivan III lifetime nominations as the tsar are considered in the context of the formation of the ‘political’ culture of the Russian state). Three ways of conceptualizing the phenomenon under study were identified: the use of a conceptual-categorical apparatus of discipline or a problem field within which the study is carried out (most common); using the word ‘nomination’ as an abstract term; use of linguo-semiotic nomination theory (least common). As a general solution to attribution problems, the use of nominations in the reconstruction of long-term historical processes, as well as structures and systems of complex historical phenomena as illustrations showing what their events, elements and signs can be, is highlighted.
