Abstract: This article deals with issues of syntagmatic and paradigmatic ties of proper names in genealogies of Anglo-Saxon kings. The author analyzes thulas found in manuscripts, which contain «Anglo-Saxon chronicle». If we analyze gene-alogies of Anglo-Saxon rulers, we’ll find that they are named on the basis of allitera-tion. Thus, the author underlines a complex type of naming in Anglo-Saxon tradi-tion, when one takes into account not only the tradition of heredity, that is succession reflected in paradigms of Anglo-Saxon kings, but also observance of rules of identity on the basis of correlation of proper names of kings, on the one hand, and ethnonyms and names of kingdoms, on the other hand.

Keywords: Genre of tula, syntagmatic, paradigmatic, proper name
