Abstract: The article is devoted to the problem of the theory of punctuation marks. Linguists perceive punctuation marks as natural entities with their own appearance. However, some punctuation marks, like a phoneme, represent an abstract entity that can be realized by different concrete incarnations. In particular, this is the behavior of paired punctuation marks, which are two positions, one of which is filled with the usual dash, comma or ellipsis, and the second can be filled with different characters that perform their own function in the phrase. This turns out to be sufficient to perform the delimitation function. But not every punctuation mark is acceptable. For example, an exclamation mark creates a problem because it has to end a sentence according to the punctuation norm, but its actual function is to close internal syntagm.

Keywords: Russian punctuation, paired punctuation marks, punctuation error, exclamation mark, ellipsis, dash
