Abstract: The article discusses the practice of translation as a discursive social activity based on the material of two translations from English into Russian of one novel or the twentieth century American writer Joseph Heller “Catch-22”. The difference between these two novel translations is twenty years. The research methodology is based on the general semiotic theory of translation (D. Bakhmann-Medic, V. Rudnev) and modern medialogical concepts (I. Silantev, O. Moroz). The purpose of the work is to identify the impact of temporary discursive practices on specific translation decisions. In its turn, ideological censorship of the original, cultural transformations and representations, omissions, change in meaning and some other translation transformations realized in the Soviet practice of translation as a description of other social and cultural experiences through hollow and / or incomplete patterns are revealed. The paper considers modern translation solutions that reflect functional, linguoculturological and conceptual aspects of translation. The first part of the article proves that translation in discursive practice should always be defined as interpretation. The concepts of cultural turn in the humanities indicated in the work are filled with real content when analyzing accurate and controversial and/or incorrect translation decisions. The main results of the study are determined by the specific presentation of the source and target texts in Soviet and late Soviet discursive translation practices. The translation in relation to the interpretations of M. Vilensky, V. Titov (1967) and A. Kistyakovsky (1988) was identified as a linguistic-creative social activity that determined both the occurrence and rejection of the American text in Russian culture.

Keywords: discursive practice, interpretation, cultural transfer, linguo-creative activity, translation solution, J. Heller
