Abstract: In the paper we solve two tasks: (1) we substantiate the problem of «communication in the small prose by V. M. Shukshin and in the modern stories of the journal «Novy Mir» («New World») and (2) we consider the phenomenon of multilingualism in the stories of Shukshin and of «Novy Mir». The texts of these stories are based on the evocative reproduction of the materials of various kinds of communication – spoken and written, conversational and bookish, vernacular and professional, Russian and foreign, etc. The basic principle of organizing multilingualism is a dialogic one. This principle is largely traced back to Shukshin’s prose. In the journal prose, we distinguish two types of stories: dominating in one of them is a dialogue between characters (stories close to those by Shukshin), and in the other, the narrator. In the latter, the insignificant role of the dialogue is compensated by graphical means: blank lines, italics, writing in capital letters, short paragraphs, etc.
