Abstract: The paper deals with the motif of the image in the novel of modern Khanty writer E. Aipin «Mother of God in Blood-Red Snows», its variants and semantic functions in the structure of the work, relationship to Scenes with an icon, a paintings coming alive or a living being turning into a paintings come to life / transformation of the living into the picture as well as to the role of ornament in traditional Khanty culture.
