Abstract: It is argued that the grammatical meaning of the English participle remains unspecified in current theoretical and applied grammar studies. It is suggested that a cognitive approach in the frame of the Cognitive Theory of Tense and Aspect may facilitate a better understanding of the meaning of the English participle.

Keywords: cognition, cognitive semantics, grammatical meaning, grammatical category, perception
