Abstract: The present paper investigates certain peculiarities of the Russian verb подражать (to imitate) in the internal and external possessive constructions (IPC and EPC). The author determines factors regulating the possibility of valency splitting, reveals its semantic and pragmatic consequences, and advances the hypothesis that the presence of a split diathesis with an external possessor is considered as a cause of derivational redundancy in the domain of nomina abstracta word-formation.
