Abstract: This paper presents a lexical semantic analysis of the derivative model vz + isk, which is typi-cal of the contexts of the language of investigations in Russia in the second half of the 19th century. The study material is composed of selected entries from several historical and linguistic dictionaries and the texts of regional written monuments of business language for the corresponding period. The semantic features are examined of the predicates vzyskat' and vzyskivat' (collect), the verbal nouns vzysk, vzyskanie, and neravzyskanie (penalties), the adverb vzyskatel'no (demandingly), and the adjective vzyskatel'nyi (demanding). Analysis of the contexts allows the following conclusion to be drawn: given that the root -isk- is retained, variability is observed in the prefix, suffix, and postfix morphemes only. These lexical units are known to have been activated only in the early XVII century, which fact shaped the functional development of the language of investigations, an individual stylistic sublanguage of the official and business style.

Keywords: business writing, xix century, language of investigations, linguistic source stud-ies, derivative model
