Abstract: The article is devoted to the literary originality of «The Book of Interpretations and Morals» by protopope Avvakum as a work that reflects the new principle of individuality of the traditional exegetical genre for the Russian literature of XVII century. Among the features of the Book, indicating the discovery of the value of the human personality in the Russian literature, are creating of a connection between Avvakum’s interpretations with the events of splitting in the Russian Orthodox Church (to improve the effectiveness of persuasion in readers), the use of a spoken language, the use of interpretations in a form of the direct conversation with readers, richness of the narration with the emotions and the autobiographical details, and the author's willing to explain his work. By the power of expression of individuality and artistic expressiveness of some fragments, «The Book of Interpretations and Morals» can be compared with the autobiographical «Zhitye» by Avvakum.
