Name: Parataxis and Metaphor (On the Material of the Tropeic Usage of the Word in the Texts of Fyodor M. Dostoevsky)

Authors: Igor V. Ruzhitskiy, Ekaterina V. Potyomkina

Abstract:

The article discusses some possible approaches to the study of metaphor in the texts of Fyodor M. Dostoevsky, while this type of trope is proposed to be analyzed as a particular phenomenon of parataxis. Abstracting from the original, purely syntactic interpretation, we understand by parataxis the mechanism of “object disposition”. The paper contains examples of parataxis analysis in different fields of knowledge and also reveals the connection of parataxis with Fyodor M. Dostoevsky’s “paradoxes”, which is reflected in the use of certain tropes. Parataxis underlies the construction of a metaphor – in transferring the properties from one class of objects to another. The resources of the Dostoevsky’s Language Dictionary allow us to identify a large layer of contexts of metaphorical use of the described idioglossas – these are the words that characterize the author’s style, and thereby determine the individuality of parataxis and its functions in the writer’s texts.
